NAFCON USA
NAFCON was founded in December 2003 in San Jose, California as a response to the discrimination and scapegoating of immigrants at the aftermath of 9/11. Filipino groups and church leaders recognized similar impacts across the US and aimed to bring the discussion and support for the Filipino community to a national level.
Since then, NAFCON has tackled immigration-related issues like deportation and labor trafficking. We have also taken on concerns of Filipino workers like workplace discrimination and wage theft. NAFCON members have won over $1 million in unpaid wages through campaigns for Filipino caregivers, hotel workers, and others.
Through conferences and leadership trainings, NAFCON has also engaged, empowered, and united Filipino youth across the country. We educate the youth and larger community on our history, culture, and current issues affecting Filipinos in the US and the Philippines. As major disasters hit the Philippines in the last decade, NAFCON has also responded timely in gathering support for affected communities. The relief and rehabilitation response for Typhoon Haiyan survivors was one of our most successful and biggest undertakings thus far.
THE CAMPAIGN
On March 17 and 18, we hosted a 2 part webinar series with the objective of presenting accurate and reliable information to the community and to gather needs of our communities. From this, we realized that there is an urgent need to provide essential resources and services to impacted communities in the US as well as their families and health workers in the Philippines.
It is in this light that the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns is launching a national health and wellness campaign Bayanihan Response to COVID-19 to respond to the urgent and long-term needs of impacted Filipino communities in the US and the Philippines, especially the most vulnerable.
Through this campaign, we aim to:
1. Deliver resources and services urgently needed by impacted communities
2. Disseminate accurate and reliable information to our communities
2.5 Advocate for the most vulnerable
3. Engage the community in the campaign with the collective Bayanihan spirit
4. Collaborate with grassroots organizations, service institutions, private entities, and government agencies.
This campaign has four components:
1. Research and Education (R&E)
2. Services
3. Action and Advocacy (AA)
4. Resource Mobilization (RM)
