Gabriela Silang is perhaps the best known Filipina revolutionary leader against Spanish colonialism. She is best remembered for being a leading figure in the movement to liberate our people (Silang Reovlt 1762-1763), from strategizing the revolt, to actually fighting in the frontlines of the battles against Spain.
.
After the death of her husband Diego in 1763, Gabriela led over 2,000 revolutionaries and defeated the Spaniards in the Battle of Santa, in the town where she was born and raised. She was fierce in the battlefield, earning her the title “La Generala,” which in turn gave us an immortalized image of Gabriela as a fierce bolo-wielding Filipina warrior on horseback!
.
Gabriela continued the armed struggle to overthrow the Spaniards in Northern Luzon. She dedicated her life to liberate her people from the chains of colonialism, and even with setbacks such as the death of her husband, and the failed siege of the City of Vigan, Gabriela never gave up.
.
Today, Gabriela is an enduring symbol of the courage & the fierce leadership of the Filipina women!
